Post 6

 pasta
I was reading a book called Something Like Fate and it was definitely not very interesting. I thought by the cover it was going to be super but oh no it was not! I stopped reading it at about chapter 10 and there was like 50 chapters, which is a lot of chapters for a book with no point. So alas I stopped and turned it in. Today however I went to Portland Elementary with NEHS (National English Honor Society) and read childrens books to children. I read The Icky Sticky Frog and I had never read that book before and I loved it! It is about a frog who eats a fly and a grasshopper and he goes to eat a butterfly but gets swallowed by a fish. I hadn't read this so I was surprised at the ending but the children had read it and knew what was going to happen and so they ruined it for me. Obviously the kids had read the book and liked it enough, or read it enough, to remember the ending. Now that I am done with my childrens book and have retired from reading Something Like Fate I will start a new book, that way I can keep up with these blog posts. I ordered two books online on Sunday, Grey's Anatomy: Notes from the Nurse's Station and Overheard at the Emerald City Bar and The Grey's Anatomy Guide to Healing with Love: With Dr. Sydney Heron and they are set to be delivered tomorrow and I shall start one then. I am super excited to read them because I am totally completely obsessed with Grey's Anatomy, it is my thing! My next blog post will have more actaul book talk in it.

Something Like Fate; Review 5

At the moment I am reading a book called Something Like Fate and I have no made it very far, basically because I haven't made time to read it lately. I am on chapter five, which is only 20 pages in. The cover of the book is what made me choose it; lets face it regardless of the saying "don't judge a book by its cover" we all do it and it just so happens that is how I pick what to read. So far in the book it has just been the two girl friends talking about their boy troubles and the boy and girl friend talking about a big secret. Nothing "juicy" has happened as of yet and if it doesn't soon I might have to pick a new book.
Page 8: "Erin is in love." That is the four words that start off chapter three and they make me laugh. Seriously you are in high school, you have no idea what love is, lust and infatuation definitely, but not love. The chapter goes on to talk about which boy it is this time, which is another thing that cracked me up, which one this time? Then it obviously is not love.
Page 18-19: "aceofwands: 'just a feeling. oh i told him i like him.' berrygirl: 'what happened to waiting for him to come to you?' aceofwands: 'i did! he's the one who called me, remember? so i was like, okay, he's putting himself out there, i can meet the boy halfway.'" This is another passage that cracks me up because why can't the boy just talk to you because he considers you a friend? In this book they think just because a boy calls you that he is putting himself out there which obviously means he is into you, so not the case.
I think I might end up not liking this book, not only does it seem to be all about the drama but it is kind of moving slow.

It's A Cheese Fest aka "Tweet Heart" response 4

Right now I am reading a book called "Tweet Heart" and like my title suggests it is a rather large cheese fest. The book is written through blogs, emails, and tweets, which is why I chose to read it. Just a little background on the book; it is between four friends, two guys and two girls, one of the girls is hoplessly in "love" with someone not in their group but talks to the guy in their group about it who is hoplessly in "love" with her. Basically it is good 'ol fashion teen dramas, but not the pregnacy and drug type drama, just the "oh my gosh what if he doesn't like me like I like him" drama.

Below is a passage from pages 34-35:

"Dear Clueless,
Is it true that peanut butter can cure hickeys? My older sister told me that it was a surefire plan..
--All Marked Up
Dear All Marked Up,
I've had about as many hickeys as I've had shark encounters, scuffles with serial killers, Olympic gold medal performances, and vampire run-ins. Which is to say, none at all. Although I am a big fan of scarves, so I imagine that if I did find myself with a purple neck, I would go that route instead of reaching for the peanut butter.
However if you are set on the nuttier method (pun intended), I would advise doing a "test patch" like they tell you to do when you use hair dye or home-waxing kits. I'd suggest not just globbing and going. You might get a bigger but taken out if you stumble upon a particularly hungry soccer player. Or worse, your hickey giver could come back, and who knows? He or she might have a peanut allergy and explaining that one to an emergency room doctor is something I CAN'T help you with. Noo one, except maybe one of those vampires I haven't met, wants to risk being involved in a fatal neck-sucking session. And I'm guessing you are not a vampire. Or are you?
After careful consideration, I've decided on my finial answer. Wear a scarf. Or a turtleneck. Or both. You will be fashionable and discreet."

I chose to put this passage in here because it cracks me up. Claire is the person who is giving the very clueless advice, hince the name Clueless, and it is funny that she has no idea what she is talking about. The advice about getting rid of a hickey is so very high school that, that in itself made me laugh, but the passage was also very hilarious.

I am almost done with this book, which makes the fourth book that I have read for this quarter, which is insane because I don't even like to read. So far I have stuck to pretty easy reads with serious or cheesy story lines, but the next book I would like it to be more of a chapter book with an actual plot; so I am asking for suggestions. What should I read next?

Chasing Brooklyn

I just finished reading a book called "Chasing Brooklyn" by Lisa Schroeder which is about a girl named Brooklyn whose boyfriend dies and she has a hard time coping with that. Her boyfriend, Lucca, was in a car crash and was the one that died, he had a friend Gabe and he couldn't take the stress of losing Lucca and ended up killing himself. Throughout the book Brooklyn finds hanging out with Nico, Lucca's brother, and training for a triathalon. I won't give anything thing away about the end of the book in case you decide to read it.
This book is modeled like the Ellen Hopkins books that I love to read, free verse poetry, which is weird that I like reading books structured that way because I hate poetry but hey it is what it is. I have never lost a boyfriend, or friend, or sibling in a car crash or been haunted by a ghost so I cannot say I can identify with what Brooklyn goes through in the book but the storyline is a really good one.
Lisa Schroeder has another book, which I guess technically is the first one, but I had to be different and read them backwards, but the first book is called "I Heart You, You Haunt Me" and I have not finished that one yet, almost there, but it is great as well. The books are similar in plot and a character from the first makes an appearence in "Chasing Brooklyn" and helps her get through her confusion on her situation. I really like both of these books and I would suggest that you read them as well.

"Perfect"-times 2

"Perfect"- times 2 (Pages 253-622)

I finished reading my book about four days ago which means I have had some serious time to think about the book. Most all of the books written by Ellen Hopkins have a serious message in them and they all deal with something life changing; by the title, “Perfect”, this book deals with how we see ourselves and the goal to be “perfect”.
I don’t want to ruin the book for anyone in case you decide that you would like to read it, but before you read “Perfect” I would read “Impulse” which is also by Ellen Hopkins but in a sense it is like a prequel to “Perfect”. The book has a sad ending and it deals with an issue that is serious, I will tell you now that the issue is suicide but I won’t tell you who just in case you are reading it or would like to read it.

Along with the goal of being perfect the book also deals with following your dreams. Someone, I am not sure who, once said “If you can dream it, be it.” Sometimes we let what others may think if they found out about our dream or what our parents say hold us back from going for what matters to us and what we believe. Throughout the book that is the case with one of the characters but at the end of the book he changes his mind and goes for it because one guys view on life inspires him.

This is an excerpt from page 1 of “Perfect” by Ellen Hopkins

How

do you define a word without

                concrete meaning? To each

his own, the saying goes, so

why

                push to attain an ideal

state of being that no two

                random people will agree is

where

                you want to be? Faultless.

                Finished. Incomparable. People

can never be these, and anyway

when

                did creating a flawless façade

                become a more vital goal

than learning to love the person

who

                lives inside your skin?

                The outside belongs to others.

Only you should decide for you—

what

                is perfect.

This is my favorite page from the book because it looks at the “meaning” of being perfect to people. We should all be okay with who we are and strive to be what we want to be not who others want us to be. We shouldn’t let what others think or how they look dictate how we live our lives. With this review my challenge to you, the reader, is to step out of the strive to be perfect in the eyes of those around you and embrace who you are because you are perfect just by being yourself.

Perfect by Ellen Hopkins: Reflection 1

Perfect by Ellen Hopkins

The first book I chose to read and start my blog on is entitled “Perfect” by Ellen Hopkins. As the title states this book is about what it means to be perfect or better yet what it means to have imperfections. This book is not a chapter book, it switches between characters; there are four main characters- Cara, Kendra, Sean, and Andre.

Cara is what you would consider the “perfect” girl, she is smart and pretty and also a cheerleader. Kendra is the girl who is pretty but sees every little thing that is wrong with her, and is trying to be a model and is also a cheerleader. Sean is the jock who is dating Cara and thinks he is in love with her. Andre is the kid who has big dreams but keeps them to himself because his parent will not approve.

So far I am up to page 253, which would seem like a lot in any other book but in an Ellen Hopkins book it is not a lot at all. The book is written in a free verse poem form, which makes it weird that I love all of her books because I, for one, hate poetry!

The title of the book in one of the things that intrigued me because what is perfect? What is the definition of the word? Does it vary from person to person? How do you define a word that cannot be used to describe a race that is so imperfect?

Going through this book makes me take a step back and wonder about the people around me, makes me wonder if the people I know feel the way that the people in the book feel? Up to the point I am in the book, this will sound corny, but it makes me want to be a better person, to make sure I treat people right because the truth is no one is perfect.
